Productivity Growth in China's Manufacturing Sector: 1998-2013

Dr. Yifan ZHANG is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include international trade and economic development. He has published in academic journals such as American Economic Review, Journal of Development Economics and Journal of International Economics. He has been a consultant for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia.
We use firm-level data from State Taxation Administration for 2007-2013 to study the productivity growth of China’s manufacturing firms. We develop weighting method to simulate micro samples that are representative of the above-scale NBS sample. We find that the annual productivity growth declined to 1% toward the end of the sample period (2012-2013).
